The 60-member Queensland Youth Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Dr Bradley Voltz and the Cooloola Community Orchestra conducted by Lloyd Robins present a feast of popular orchestral classics.
The concert will feature musical medleys from West Side Story, Lord of the Rings, Phantom of the Opera and Pirates of the Caribbean, as well as classical works by Haydn, Bizet, Mascagni and Sibelius.
One of the many highlights will be trumpet soloist George Wilson playing the First Movement of Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto.
The Cooloola Community Orchestra is a group of talented Classical musicians located in the Gympie Region and is comprised of strings, wind, brass, keyboard and percussion players from Gympie and surrounding areas, with the aim of providing a place to play fine music together and to present that music to an appreciative public.
For some time the Orchestra was in recess and during that time the Gympie Strings, a string group under the direction of local violinist and violist Heidi Kath, was keeping the dream alive with regular rehearsals and occasional concert appearances in and around Gympie. The Gympie Strings survives today as an elite string group functioning as part of the Cooloola Community Orchestra, and is invaluable in the training of participating string players.
The Orchestra was reformed from the Gympie Youth Music Society in 2016 under the musical direction of Lloyd Robins, with approximately 20 players and has since grown to over 30. As the Orchestra’s Membership has grown, so has the musical standard of the group, which has seen the Orchestra play concerts in and around Gympie to audiences grateful for the return of a such music to Gympie and surrounding Cooloola regions. The Orchestra is now becoming well known in the area for playing entertaining variety concerts that are bringing Classical music back to the Gympie Region audiences.
Music for the afternoon will include excerpts from Lord of the Rings Return of the King and Phantom of the Opera
